Based in Lausanne, the Béjart Ballet Lausanne is one of the few companies able to fill vast spaces, from the Palais des congrès in Paris to the Kremlin. Born in 1987 from Maurice Béjart’s vision, it carries on a popular, spectacular dance, nourished by music.
The Béjart Ballet Lausanne
Maurice Béjart’s company
After founding and directing the Ballet du XXe siècle in Brussels, Maurice Béjart moved his company to Lausanne and, in 1987, created the Béjart Ballet Lausanne. It is one of the very few companies in the world able to fill gigantic spaces: the NHK Hall in Tokyo, the Kremlin State Palace in Moscow, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, the Palais des congrès in Paris or Forest National in Brussels. Béjart’s dance, sweeping and popular, gathers thousands of spectators there.

A living repertoire
When the founder died in 2007, the dancer and choreographer Gil Roman took over the company’s artistic direction, which he led until November 2021. He maintained and developed the repertoire, centred on Béjart’s emblematic choreographies — “The Rite of Spring”, “Boléro”, “The Ninth Symphony” or “Ballet for Life” — while showing its variety, from “Piaf” to “The Magic Flute”. The company also invites other choreographers, such as Alonzo King or Giorgio Madia, and has revealed many dancers, from Aesha Ash to Céline Cassone.
