Set on a belvedere three hundred metres from the lake, this large forty-six-room manor house is not really a castle: it was designed in the late nineteenth century by a Geneva architect for a French aristocrat. The writer Joseph Kessel lived there for a time; the property then passed to the Haut-Léman communes, which put nine million francs of work into it in the 1980s, and the Californian design school Art Center was its tenant from 1986 to 1996. In 1998 the Canadian singer Shania Twain settled there with her husband, the musician and producer John Robert “Mutt” Lange, whom she had met in London after he noticed one of her videos: they married a few months later and wrote together the songs that made her the biggest-selling artist of her time, “Come on Over” having shifted thirty-four million copies. The couple undertook six million francs of works, notably to fit out a recording studio on the property (Le Temps). Lange was no stranger to rock: he had produced “Highway to Hell” and then “Back in Black” for AC/DC, a band that would later record “Fly on the Wall” at Mountain Studios, a few kilometres away. The property remains private and cannot be visited.
