On the heights of Clarens, the Hôtel des Crêtes welcomed Maurice Ravel in the spring of 1913, who had come to work with Igor Stravinsky, lodging close by at the Hôtel du Châtelard, on the orchestration of Mussorgsky’s “Khovanshchina” for the Ballets Russes. Clarens was then a genuine workshop of twentieth-century music: it was in the village that Stravinsky was completing “The Rite of Spring”. The building still stands and recalls that lakeside season when two of the century’s greatest composers were neighbours.
