It was in this building on the Avenue des Alpes that Jean Villard, known as Gilles (1895-1982), one of the fathers of French-Swiss song, was born on 2 June 1895. The author of “Les Trois Cloches”, immortalised by Édith Piaf and Les Compagnons de la chanson, and of “La Venoge”, which became a Vaudois emblem, he was also a cabaret pioneer with his duos Gilles et Julien and then Gilles et Urfer. A plaque placed in 1984 marks his birthplace: “Here was born on 2 June 1895 Jean Villard-Gilles, Vaudois poet and songwriter”.
