Opened in 1969, the twin Chillon viaducts sweep their concrete curves above the vineyards and the lake, just behind the castle: a feat of engineering that became, almost by accident, an emblematic Riviera backdrop. Shortly after they opened, they provided the setting for the poster “All Roads Lead To Knebworth”, announcing Pink Floyd’s concert of 5 July 1975 at Knebworth Park: on a retouched photograph of the motorway, with the Château de Chillon visible below and a cyclist at a standstill, the graphic studio Hipgnosis scattered bicycle parts floating in the sky. The British band had also left its mark on Montreux on 18 and 19 September 1971: the classical festival Septembre Musical programmed them at the Pavillon for an ambitious version of “Atom Heart Mother”, backed by a string orchestra and choirs brought from London, one of the boldest episodes in the town’s musical history.
