Eddie Gómez: the bass of the three Montreux albums
The Grammy trio, 1968
On 15 June 1968, at the Casino, Eddie Gómez, Bill Evans and drummer Jack DeJohnette gave a concert recorded live. Gómez had been playing with Evans for two years; their understanding was complete. The record, “Bill Evans at the Montreux Jazz Festival”, won the 1969 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
Montreux I, II and III
Gómez is the man of Bill Evans’s three “Montreux” albums: the Grammy record in 1968, “Montreux II” in 1970 (with drummer Marty Morell), then “Montreux III” in 1975, a duo with the pianist, without drums. Few musicians have left so Montreux-tied a trace.
