Oskar Jüttner

Oskar Jüttner (born 1863 in Liegnitz, in Prussian Silesia) was, from 1889 to 1906, the conductor of the orchestra of the Casino-Kursaal de Montreux, then at the heart of the resort’s social life. In the belle-époque of tourism, the reputation of a spa town also rested on the quality of its music: appointed at twenty-six, Jüttner gave daily concerts there, morning and evening, blending Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner with the new French school, Chabrier, Massenet, Vincent d’Indy, and brought in leading soloists, from Pablo de Sarasate to Joseph Joachim, from Pablo Casals to Ignacy Paderewski. He left Montreux in 1906; he was succeeded by Julius Lange, then Ernest Ansermet.
