La 17ème, the artists’ workshop
A place born of lockdown
The idea of La 17ème took shape during the Covid-19 pandemic, in a Vevey flatshare where artists filmed themselves live. The association opened in February 2021, then moved into a building three to four times larger than planned, on Avenue des Alpes, so it could host bands.
The house describes itself as “a place of sharing, creation, work and encounters for artists and the public in the very centre of Montreux”. Non-profit and dedicated to Swiss artists, it is run by Orson Gremaud.
Stage, studios and support
The place brings together a hybrid concert hall, a music room and a dance room, offered as residencies. Beyond its walls, La 17ème provides career guidance and technical support, from filming to recording for digital media, helping artists to progress in their art and their profession alike.
Its wager is simple: to show that it is possible to succeed in music from Switzerland. Outside the Montreux Jazz Festival season, it thus keeps the local scene alive all year round, a few steps from the lake.
