The Yodleurclub Montreux is a yodelling society founded in 1923, born in the wake of the Sängerbund. Today it brings together some twenty active singers. Its repertoire, long turned towards Swiss-German folklore, has opened up to songs in French, translations or works by French-speaking composers. The society takes part regularly in the regional and federal yodellers’ festivals, and rehearses on Tuesday evenings at the parish hall of the German church in Montreux.

The Yodleurclub Montreux

From homesickness to yodelling (1923)

The society came into being in 1923. At the time many young Swiss Germans came to spend “their year among the Welsches” to learn French. Far from home and with few distractions, they looked for places to forget their homesickness and speak their mother tongue. What could be simpler than to do so by singing: a few friends, from the Sängerbund, gathered to keep up the folklore from across the Sarine.

Today

The club now numbers some twenty active singers and has broadened its repertoire to songs in French, translations or works by French-speaking composers. It takes part regularly in the regional and federal yodellers’ festivals. Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays from 7.30 pm, at the parish hall of the German church in Montreux, and new voices are welcome.
