Cimetière de Corsier-sur-Vevey, 1804 Corsier-sur-Vevey

In this small village cemetery above Vevey rest Charlie Chaplin, who died on Christmas Day 1977, and his wife Oona, who died in 1991. It is a place of quiet remembrance, not an attraction: visits should be discreet, out of respect for the site and for the families whose loved ones are buried here.

A village cemetery, two actors and a great deal of discretion

Charlie and Oona Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin died at the Manoir de Ban on 25 December 1977, after twenty-five years on the Riviera. He is buried in the cemetery of Corsier-sur-Vevey, the commune of his home. Oona O’Neill, his wife since 1943, joined him there after her death in 1991; they rest side by side.

In March 1978, a few weeks after the burial, the coffin was stolen for ransom before being recovered and reburied. The episode left its mark, but it says nothing of the place as it is today: a quiet communal cemetery, where people come to pay their respects.

James Mason, a few rows below

A little below Chaplin’s grave rests James Neville Mason (1909-1984), the great British actor who settled on the Riviera at the end of his life. The two men knew each other; today they are buried a few steps apart, in the same small cemetery.
