Silhouette de Clara Haskil
- Type
- “Rencontres & Inspiration” silhouette
- Address
- Quai Perdonnet 19, Vevey
The silhouette is part of the “Rencontres & Inspiration” trail, which dots the Riviera with figures who lived or stayed here. This one stands on the Quai Perdonnet, a few steps from the addresses where Clara Haskil spent the last eighteen years of her life. A Jewish pianist born in Bucharest, she took refuge in Switzerland at the end of 1942 and settled in Vevey: first with the Gétaz family on the Rue de Lausanne, then at the former Hôtel d’Angleterre on this very quay. She also rented a chalet in Cornaux, towards Montreux. Naturalised Swiss in 1949, she died in Brussels in 1960. Vevey honours her every two years with the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition, one of the most demanding in the world.
