A refugee in Switzerland since February 1945 after fleeing Nazi Germany, Wilhelm Furtwängler was reunited in Montreux with his wife Elisabeth, née Ackermann, whom he had married in a civil ceremony in Potsdam in 1943, and their son Andreas, born in Zurich on 11 November 1944, whom he then saw for the first time. It was in this church, which at the time belonged to the Église libre du canton de Vaud, a Protestant denomination separate from the cantonal state church until their merger in 1966, that he had his marriage blessed and his son baptised, at the end of 1945. The building today belongs to the Église réformée vaudoise, Paroisse de Montreux-Veytaux.
