In Caux, halfway between Montreux and the Rochers-de-Naye, a former sheepfold was turned into a cultural centre by Paul du Marchie v.V. Its music room houses a digital classical organ with four manuals and eighty-five stops and a thirty-two-note pedalboard, able to serve both the Baroque and the Romantic repertoire, as well as a hybrid grand piano. Concerts are given there for twenty-five people at most: a tiny room, the opposite of the Auditorium Stravinski, where you hear the organ a few metres from the instrument. Paul and Nicole du Marchie v.V., both organists, have recorded several CDs there.

Paul Du Marchie, the man of the Liboson

Several lives in one

The Liboson bears the mark of a single man, Paul Du Marchie. Adventurer, philosopher, craftsman, musician, watchmaker: he did not lead one life but several. A great traveller, he discovered the desert in the 1940s and shared the daily life of nomads for many years.

In his secluded house at the Liboson, above Montreux, he made a place in his own image, where beauty and mystery invite introspection. Past the age of ninety, he was still passing on there, with great fire, a vision of life founded on wonder.

“L’homme qui maîtrisait le temps”, report by Valérie Teuscher, Passe-moi les jumelles, RTS, 26 October 2018.

A doorway onto beauty

The Liboson is not only a music room. On this solitary alpine meadow above Montreux, Paul and Nicole du Marchie van Voorthuysen devoted their lives to a single quest, that of beauty, approached through philosophy, science, art and music. You step into it as into a place out of time.
