When Queen first came to Montreux, in 1978, they needed somewhere to rehearse. The choice fell on a small ballet school closed for the summer, whose use had been granted only on the understanding that this was “a quartet of musicians doing a little practice”. Freddie Mercury’s Steinway piano, weighing over a tonne in its enormous flight case, badly damaged the antique parquet floor, to the horror of the staff. The volume did not help: Brian May cranked his Red Special through a Mesa Boogie amp and his trusted AC30s. The band would buy Mountain Studios that same year. The ballet school no longer exists today.
