Quai Ernest-Ansermet

- Type
- Lakeside quay
- Address
- Quai Ernest-Ansermet, Montreux
On the flowered quays of Montreux, a section of the lakeside promenade bears the name of Ernest Ansermet (1883-1969). It runs close to the Rue Igor-Stravinsky: two neighbouring streets for two friends who, from the Riviera, carried twentieth-century music. An engraved stone recalls that Ansermet, born in Vevey, conducted the Kursaal de Montreux concert orchestra nearby from 1912 to 1914, before founding the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in 1918. See the artist page for his full story.
The Quai Ernest-Ansermet, a musical lakeside promenade
A promenade lined with music
Over a few dozen metres, the Quai Ernest-Ansermet brings together several places linked to the festival and its musicians: the Casino de Montreux and its landing stage, where so many artists posed, the Banc Claude Nobs, the bust of David Richards and the Queen Tribute Wall.
Close by, the Rue Igor-Stravinsky and the lakeside busts extend this musical geography of the Montreux quays.
The quay, backdrop of famous photographs
This promenade, between the palm trees and Lake Geneva, has been the backdrop of pictures that became famous. In April 1964, on their very first trip outside Great Britain, the Rolling Stones posed on the Montreux quays.
One of these photographs shows them by the lake, among the palm trees. The whole series from that stay can be found on the Rolling Stones page.
In 1988, it was a very young Vanessa Paradis, a rising star of French song, who posed in turn on this quay, before the lens of Bernard Leloup.
