Freddie Mercury gave two Japanese kimonos to Thierry Amsallem and Claude Nobs, without saying which was for whom: the white one is shown here at the Montreux Jazz Café, at the heart of the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace; the black one is kept at the Le Picotin chalet, in Caux. Cranes, pines and waves are finely embroidered on the silk. Thierry Amsallem remembers that Freddie brought them himself one day, and that they were worn at a few parties, where everyone flew about like birds in the garden.
