Quai Edouard Jacoud, 1820 Montreux

“Allô Claude” is a red telephone box that the Montreux artist Pascal Bettex has packed with small objects: a record, a train, a motorbike, a harmonica, a saxophone, bicycle wheels, one of Claude Nobs’s Bernese mountain dogs, a model of the Picotin chalet and the cut-out profile of the festival’s founder, complete with his round glasses. Press a switch and the whole little world starts turning. The installation pays tribute to Claude Nobs, who died on 10 January 2013, and won the public’s first prize at the Biennale de Montreux that same year. It belongs to the Fondation du Montreux Jazz Festival.

From the Place du Marché to the quay

The box first spent several years below the Place du Marché. It was temporarily removed to make room for the lake stage of the 2024 Montreux Jazz Festival, then, after an overhaul, was reinstalled on the Quai Edouard Jacoud, below the Rue Alexandre Emery. It now stands at the foot of the Montreux Palace gardens, some twenty metres from the work of Romero Britto and very close to the statue of Claude Nobs.
