Founded in 2010, Hana Road Studios carries on in Montreux the recording tradition opened by Queen’s Mountain Studios. A Dolby Atmos-certified music production studio, alongside a photo and video studio, it hosts songwriting camps, film scores and podcasts. The place is not open to visitors: it works by appointment.

A studio inside the hotel, close to the former Mountain Studios
Hana Road Studios opened in 2010 in the heart of Montreux, under the sign of the J5 Hotel Helvetie, on Avenue du Casino. The address is no accident: a few steps away, inside the Casino, once stood Queen’s legendary Mountain Studios, cradle of nearly three hundred records. The newcomer takes up that torch and carries it into the digital age.
Behind an old hotel façade, the studio lines up a Dolby Atmos-certified control room, a large live room for around twenty musicians, a vocal booth and a photo and video studio. Here they record, mix and master, but they also write: songwriting camps, bespoke arrangements, music for film, television and Netflix, podcasts. The studio even launched its own label to support the region’s artists.
The man behind the studio
At the head of Hana Road Studios is Artémy Shulgin (born 25 August 1994), a Russian music producer and business manager. The son of the Russian singer Valeriya and the composer and producer Alexander Shulgin, he grew up surrounded by music before making it his profession and settling in Montreux, where he runs the studio and his company MEVIA.
A podcast guest, he describes music as an industry in full mutation and stresses one point: today’s young artists must understand marketing and the workings of the business as much as their art. That is precisely what his studio seeks to pass on to them, well beyond recording alone.
The stars pass through Hana Road
In July 2023, between two Montreux Jazz Festival concerts, the American rapper Lil Nas X pushed open the studio door, wrapped in a golden-yellow Versace robe. Season after season, the list of visitors grows: Britain’s James Blunt, who owns a chalet in Verbier and spends much of the year in Switzerland, has become a regular and recorded here in early 2025; Nigeria’s CKay laid down his sessions, and the faces of Steve Aoki, Woodkid, Aloe Blacc, TYGA and the New York veteran Easy Mo Bee line the hallway walls.
The secret lies as much in the place as in the team: a collective of producers and engineers who, like Claude Nobs in his day, know how to put artists at ease on the shore of Lake Geneva.
Iggy Pop’s mix and Rag’n’Bone Man’s video
The studio has also worked on two projects born on the Montreux Jazz Festival stage. It handled the mix of Iggy Pop’s “Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 2023”, a recording of the concert given at the Auditorium Stravinski and released by earMUSIC in January 2025. For The Luna Collective, the album captures “raw punk power” from the Iguana, then seventy-six years old.
Its video unit also filmed Rag’n’Bone Man for an acoustic version of “Rush of Blood”, shot in the intimacy of Claude Nobs’s chalets at Caux, on the heights above Montreux.
