2023: the Sotheby’s sale reveals four posters
Freddie Mercury was a customer of the house. He bought cashmere there, especially in the last years of his life, a lighter and more comfortable material to wear, says Maria Ausoni.
In 2023 Sotheby’s put the contents of Garden Lodge, Freddie Mercury’s house, up for sale in London under the title “Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own”. Among the thousands of lots was a set of four advertising posters for La Griffe Ausoni, the boutique on Montreux’s Grand-Rue.
Nothing obliges a singer to take home the posters of a small-town shop. That is perhaps what makes the lot telling: for him, Montreux was not a touring backdrop but an everyday place. The posters are described in Sotheby’s catalogue.
The shop is still there, on the Grand-Rue, and the posters can still be found in it.
