Summer 1991, a very unassuming client
In the summer of 1991 a man walked into the Clarens showroom. Denis Viquerat did not immediately recognise Freddie Mercury: the client was very unassuming, and friendly.
The order covered the complete furnishing of the Territet flat. It was filed under a code name, A73. The singer wanted nothing extravagant: he chose a mixed set of English Directoire and Empire furniture, combined with Japanese and Chinese lacquer pieces.
It was one of the last things he undertook: he died in London on 24 November of that same year.
Denis Viquerat, who runs the firm, speaks of it with feeling: it is one of the commissions that marked him most. The company, founded by Ami Viquerat and then taken over by his eldest son Jean-Louis and by Denis, the third generation, has celebrated its hundredth year. It has kept its upholsterer’s workshop, which makes curtains, blinds, wall hangings and headboards and upholsters seats with buttoning or springs — bespoke work that has become rare around Lake Geneva.
