Two Persians in Montreux
April 1964: the Rolling Stones on the site
On 20 April 1964 the Rolling Stones made their first appearance outside Britain at the Montreux Casino, for the programme “Ready, Steady, Go!” recorded as part of the Golden Rose. The building of the time burned down in 1971.
A photograph taken that month shows the band on the site now occupied by Le Palais Oriental, on the lakefront.
A carpet, and an invitation to Territet
Freddie Mercury may never have set foot in the Palais Oriental. But he had met its owner, Shahriar Gharibi, at the Montreux Palace, and had taken an interest in one of his Persian carpets.
He invited him to his home in Territet. Both men were of Persian origin — that is what had brought them together.
The Rolling Stones, for their part, did come to this spot: a photograph shows them there.
