It was in this elegant Belle Époque building of 1900, set on the lakeside promenade in Territet, that Freddie Mercury owned his Montreux apartment: a duplex attic where he spent his last stays in the region, a few minutes from Mountain Studios. The apartment was sold at auction in 2020. The building is a private residence that cannot be visited, but the quayside promenade passes right in front of it and the Freddie Mercury bench of the “Rencontres & Inspiration” trail is a few steps away.
Les Tourelles, Freddie Mercury’s flat
4 November 2020: the flat sold at auction
The flat covers 207 m² on the third floor, with a 44 m² balcony-terrace and an open view of the lake and mountains. Freddie Mercury, who divided his life between Montreux and London, had bought it in 1991, a few months before his death. It was here that he wrote “A Winter’s Tale”.
In 2020 the district debt-collection office put it up for auction, together with a garage, a cellar and a parking space. The sale, revealed by 24 heures, was held on Wednesday 4 November at 10 a.m. at the Rex cinema in Vevey.
The bidding, opening at one million francs, lasted only five minutes and involved just two participants. The flat went for 2.5 million francs. The buyer, a Genevan in his sixties who wished to remain anonymous, explained his purchase by his attachment to the singer.
